The newest edition to the Polynesian Resort is a cool little bar called Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto. We had watched a few Youtube videos about it and decided that we had to go. We ended up parking at the Magic Kingdom and then walked about 5 minutes over to the Polynesian. The walk wasn’t bad at all and gave us the opportunity to see the Polynesian since we had never been there before. There was lots of construction all around the resort which can only mean one thing, lots of new stuff to come! Yay!
But back to Trader Sam’s! If that name sounds familiar to you it’s because it is named after a character on the Jungle Cruise located in the Magic Kingdom. He is the one, towards the end of the ride, that offers you “2 of his heads for 1 of yours” while holding heads in his hand. The Grotto can be found off of the Polynesian’s lobby. It is great for folks of all ages until 8 p.m. and after 8:00 it switches over to adults only.
The atmosphere is like no other. It is really dark inside and is covered with all things that create a Polynesian feel. Everywhere you look is something new to check out, which fits the Disney feel perfectly.
The Grotto offers small plated food options like pan fried dumplings, kalua pork tacos and sushi rolls. The real treat is the alcoholic beverages. There are so many to choose from including HippopotoMai-Tai, Krakatoa Punch and even a rum flight.
We had so many drink options we didn’t even know where to begin. We ended up getting 3 drinks. The 2 that we enjoyed the most was the Krakatoa Punch and the Shrunken Zombie Head. We even tried the Uh Oa! which was an experience all by itself. The beverages have the option to purchase a souvenir mug which we ended up buying.

All of the drinks were really good with the exception being the Uh Oa! This was partly our own fault. To explain a little more, whenever you order a drink certain things will happen throughout the bar. For example, when you order an Uh Oa! a giant Tiki God “appears” at the back of the bar and you must make the Tiki God happy. The drink is served with a sugar cube lit on fire and the small flat areas on the top of the drink cup are filled with cinnamon. Now to make the Tiki God happy you are supposed to throw the cinnamon onto the flame which creates some really cool sparks. You are supposed to continue doing this until the Tiki God is happy and finally disappears which is what we did. Then we went to drink it and it tasted horrible! It was just overwhelmingly cinnamon making the drink almost impossible to enjoy. We realized this after the fact and would do it a little differently next time!
Another thing that the bartenders do that ties into the whole Jungle Cruise theme is really funny. If you’ve been on the Jungle Cruise before than you are aware of the 8th wonder of the world, the backside of water. So keeping with that theme if you are brave enough to order a water the bartenders will hold up a glass of water and show everyone the 8th wonder of the world. We really enjoyed it and couldn’t stop laughing, maybe because we are a little Disney obsessed!
Overall we loved the experience at Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto and can’t wait to go back. Although next time it will be without the cinnamon!
